One of 2009's most anticipated albums, On the Move is a double CD packed with twenty tracks and over ninety minutes of music and spoken word spanning several genres including hip-hop, jazz, R&B, rock and spoken word. Those lending their voices to this powerful collection range from renaissance to world-renowned artists such as Grammy winners Public Enemy, Maya Azucena and Living Colour, Abiodun Oyewole of the world-famous Last Poets, who are internationally credited as the godfathers of rap, Philadelphia born Res whose song “They Say Vision” hit number one on Billboard charts, internationally acclaimed jazz and R&B vocalist Stephanie Rice, Immortal Technique – one of the most well-known unsigned rappers in the world, two-time National Endowment for the Arts winner Fred Ho and two-time John Lennon Songwriting Contest winner Nana Soul.
The songs cover subjects which Mumia has written about and struggled against in his long career as an activist, including police brutality and the death penalty.
Mumia Abu Jamal is a world famous journalist and author from Philadelphia who has been in prison since 1981 and on death row since 1983 for allegedly shooting Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. Mumia Abu-Jamal was serving as president of the Association of Black Journalists at the time of his arrest. His case has seen international support from celebrities like Ed Asner, Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon, Rage Against the Machine and Mos Def, and world leaders like Nelson Mandela. On April 6, 2009 the U.S. Supreme Court denied Mumia Abu Jamal a new trial. The Court said it will not take up Abu Jamal’s claims that prosecutors improperly excluded blacks from the jury that convicted him of murdering Faulkner.
This decision prompted the making of On the Move – which seeks to bring awareness, additional voices and renewed energy to the movement for justice for Mumia.
His latest book is Jailhouse Lawyers. More information can be found at www.millionsformumia.org.
